Mental Health in Anime + 5 Anime Recommendations That Tackle the Subject

Over the years, anime has tackled some pretty heavy subjects: death, war, complicated interpersonal relationships, the value of life.. and even though Japanese culture heavily stigmatizes it, some series even dare to talk about mental health. Since it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we thought we’d highlight how anime tends to approach this issue and recommend some of our favorite newer series that really dig deep into their characters’ mental struggles. 5 Winter 2021 Anime That Didn’t Quite Hit the Mark

The Winter 2021 anime season had some truly outstanding shows, but unfortunately, not all of the anime we were looking forward to watching lived up to our expectations. Solid narratives that rushed themselves towards the end, shaky adaptations of far superior source material, inexperienced or overworked studios biting off more than they can chew... for any number of reasons (some of which definitely had to do with the pandemic delaying or canceling many anime from last year), this season just wasn’t as solid as it could’ve been. Here are five Winter 2021 anime that didn’t quite hit the mark.

Wonder Egg Priority Isn't As Progressive As It Thinks It Is

CloverWorks’ original anime Wonder Egg Priority has been a strong contender for anime of the season all winter long thanks to its meticulously beautiful animation, realistically written friendship between the main four girls, and in-depth exploration of self-harm and suicide. It aims to expose the societal issues that cause young girls to fall into despair – things like bullying, absent parents, gender/sexuality confusion, and (especially) sexual abuse. While tackling so many heavy topics is an admirable goal, this anime’s uncomfortable stereotypes of young women and questionable portrayal of LGBT characters hold it back from true greatness. Here’s why Wonder Egg Priority isn’t as progressive as it thinks it is.

Winter 2021 is Killing It with Gorgeous Anime Background Art

The Winter 2021 anime season has certainly come out swinging, with outstanding sequels for favorites like The Promised Neverland and Beastars, as well as hot new properties like Horimiya and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. One thing that we’ve noticed so far is that these anime are absolutely killing it with their background art, especially three of them in particular: Kemono Jihen, SK8 the Infinity, and Wonder Egg Priority. So, if you’ll allow it, we’d like to gush for a while about the beautiful worlds that the animators of these shows create with their minute attention to detail. Please come join us!
