Over the years, anime has tackled some pretty heavy subjects: death, war, complicated interpersonal relationships, the value of life.. and even though Japanese culture heavily stigmatizes it, some series even dare to talk about mental health. Since it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we thought we’d highlight how anime tends to approach this issue and recommend some of our favorite newer series that really dig deep into their characters’ mental struggles. Let’s get started!
Have you ever been watching an anime and hoped deep in your heart that the characters would get a happy ending, only to have those hopes crushed in the final episode by a cruel twist that dooms the heroes to a tragic fate? We’ve certainly had that experience, and even when this kind of ending is done well (such as in a horror series), it still hurts all the same. This anime season has blessed us with a cornucopia of fantastic male characters, ranging from good boys to bad boys to maybe even some boys' love. We’re highlighting five of our favorites today, so please come join us as we praise them to the high heavens!
Even though the cast of the mainline Cells at Work series has to contend with some scary scenarios like cancer and heat stroke, the body itself is in good shape and everything seems to work out in the end. In Cells at Work! CODE BLACK, however, the body’s biggest enemy is its own host – constant drinking, smoking, sleep deprivation, stress, and more have been pushing the cells to their absolute limit for years now, in the same manner that a Japanese “black company” exploits its workers. And in episode 10, our plucky protagonist Red Blood Cell experiences something so devastating that he finally just breaks. How did this happen, and where can he possibly go from here?
Summer 2018’s Cells at Work is a mostly lighthearted educational anime that uses anthropomorphic personifications of cells to illustrate how the human body functions and how it fights diseases.
Now, Winter 2021 has brought us two new additions to the franchise: the second season of the original, and our subject for today – a much darker spin-off called Cells at Work: Code Black. In this body, unhealthy lifestyle choices like smoking and unsafe sex have made the cells’ jobs unbearably stressful and dangerous, akin to the Japanese concept of a “black company” that works its employees to the bone. Let’s take a closer look at this more mature take on the Cells at Work world!
