If you read enough manga, you’ll begin to see patterns in how artists draw their characters and worlds. But where did the big eyes, spiky hair, and everything else we associate with manga come from in the first place? And how have artists throughout the decades used and modified these ubiquitous motifs to suit their stories? Let’s take a short dive into the most common manga drawing styles and what we can learn from them!
I believe that one way games can evolve as an art medium is to really dig deep into what makes games what they are. What makes them unique? What can games look like, feel like, and do that no other medium can?
Here's a little exercise. Try to think of ten memorable character designs from Wind Waker as fast as you can. Now try it again with Twilight Princess. Link counts, certainly. And Zelda. Midna for sure. Zant, maybe. That creepy chicken thing? Ganon? ...Anyone remember any of the enemies in this game?
