The 63-episode adaptation of shoujo classic Fruits Basket finally came to its long-awaited conclusion at the end of the Spring 2021 season. And while it’s unquestionably a masterful adaptation (it was even the highest-rated anime on MyAnimeList for a time), there are a few moments that manga fans wished would’ve made the cut. Fruits Basket’s Zodiac curse sounds pretty silly when you first hear it: if a cursed person is hugged by a member of the opposite sex, they’ll temporarily transform into an animal. It seems like the perfect set-up for a wacky comedy, and the first few arcs of the story treat it that way. But once you think about it on a deeper level, it becomes clear that the curse prevents its members from forming any kind of intimacy with other people—from casual friends to even their own parents. And at the center of it all is the Zodiac’s “God”, Akito, whose iron grip on the Sohma family quashes any attempt at freedom with gaslighting and fits of rage.
We all know it when we see it - that moment in an anime when the animation suddenly transforms from its normal, plain self into a fluid, amazingly beautiful spectacle that takes our breath away. It might be a pivotal battle, a long-awaited love confession, or (fittingly enough) a magical girl transformation. And then, when it’s finally over, we pick our jaws up from the floor and marvel at what we witnessed. What just happened? and, why can’t anime be like that all the time?
Shows like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia are tense and keep us on the edge of our seat, but they wouldn’t exactly be fun places to live. Constantly living in fear of being eaten by titans or killed by supervillains? No thanks! So it’s nice to know that some anime like to slow down a little and take us down the peaceful, scenic path.
