As denizens of the internet and card-carrying members of the anime community, we’re all very familiar with memes. They run the gamut from endlessly adaptable screencaps and common tropes to inspired remixes and dances that sweep conventions all over the world. Today, we’re taking a look at five of the most iconic memes the anime fandom has ever created, just to show that weeb culture is truly a wondrous thing.
P.A. Works’ original racing anime Appare-Ranman! has awoken from its long coronavirus-induced hibernation and we can’t wait to see what more it has to offer! It’s set in an alternate universe version of the 1890s where automobile technology is flourishing, and stranded Japanese inventor Appare and his samurai chaperone Kosame decide to enter the Trans America Wild Race in California to fund their trip back home.

Korean webcomic-turned-anime Tower of God is rich with intriguing, well-rounded characters who have distinctive designs and memorable storylines, so it’s only natural to fight over who’s best guy and best girl! The God of High School is the second high-profile anime adaptation of a Korean webcomic, following Spring 2020’s Tower of God. It’s a balls-to-the-wall action thrill ride about a worldwide martial arts tournament and the three young Korean competitors who claw their way to the top. It’s only about halfway through the season so far, but we can already tell that everyone involved in this show is giving everything they have to make it the best shounen tournament anime it can possibly be. So, the summer 2020 anime season is looking a little... barren. We’ve got less than 20 new full-length anime, and even though some of them are fantastic so far (like The God of High School and Deca-Dence), it’s hard not to feel the crushing impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on both the release schedule and sometimes the content of the shows themselves.
